For ages 18+

Explore ceramic tile design through the lens of the Gardiner Museum’s extraordinary collection. Drawing inspiration from Renaissance maiolica, Islamic tile patterns, and contemporary ceramics, develop a set of original, hand-built and decorated tiles. Learn carving, stamping, sgraffito, underglaze painting, and glazing.
By the end of this 8-week course, students will have a cohesive tile set either on mesh, ready for installation, or mounted on a backerboard as a hanging art piece.

Class Outline:

  • Week 1: Inspiration and sketching
  • Week 2: Clay basics and tile forms
  • Week 3: Texture and relief
  • Week 4: Underglaze and sgraffito
  • Week 5: Hand painting with underglazes
  • Week 6: Combining and refining
  • Week 7: Glazing and colour theory
  • Week 8: Finishing and group critique

Instructor

Meg Leslie


Meg Leslie is a Canadian mosaic and ceramic artist. Her work is deeply rooted in nature, storytelling, and community. With a background in interior design and a Master Naturalist certificate, she brings a layered approach to her art—blending structural and organic, personal and ecological. Her practice has evolved from large-scale pique assiette public mosaic installations to more intimate explorations in handmade porcelain tiles. Over the past decade, she has led numerous community art projects, workshops, and creative initiatives across Ontario.
