My woodturning practice is rooted in a deep appreciation for the tradition of crafts and the cultural history of artifacts. Turning a wooden bowl shares natural communalities with the even older craft of pottery. Both historically serving similar functional roles in daily life. As my work has evolved from utilitarian objects to more abstract forms, I found myself increasingly drawn to ceramics for inspiration. I admire the malleability of the material clay and the resulting freedom ceramists have with shaping their work.
In contrast, wood imposes certain limitations. Within those constraints, I have discovered a shared visual and conceptual language with ceramics. I borrow elements such as thin walls, organic contours, diverse surface textures, and the transformative role of fire and heat. Common concepts like wabi-sabi or kintsugi-like techniques of repair help me convey my overarching theme of expressing fragility, strength and resilience. My admiration for the work of ceramists and my numerous visits to the Gardiner Museum definitely had their influence on my own style. It is therefore a great honour to have my work featured in the Gardiner Shop for this feature. – Andreas Krätschmer
Retail Feature from August to October – titled Shared Language
Care & Use: The pieces are mostly intended as sculptural display objects. They can also be used to hold dry goods or dry flowers. In terms of care, you can gently wipe them with a damp cloth as needed.
